Thought for Monday 2nd August

Ephesians 1:7-8a

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us.”

Redemption was a commercial transaction, usually freeing a slave or servant, but sometimes making a payment as a kind of fine or retribution for a fault. The experience of the Holy Spirit is a pledge or deposit (v14) which promises full redemption later. We have been set free, but we need to wait for the final judgment to know complete joy, peace and freedom.

Reflection: Does the language of commercial transactions help you understand the love and grace of God? (It doesn’t help everyone!)
