Thought for Tuesday 23rd August
“By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.”
“It’s too easy, of course, to assume that being one of God’s holy saints is just a wonderful thing all along the way. It’s too easy to imagine that the roads traveled by people like Abraham or Isaac or all the others listed in Hebrews 11 were smoother than most roads, free of spiritual potholes and sharp, dangerous curves. But it’s not true.
Reflection: Faith is not being sure where you are going but going anyway.” (Scott Hoezee)
Thought for Friday 26th August
“Instead, they were longing for a better country - a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.”
After this outline of these saints as uncertain and aliens who didn’t fit in, we’re told that “Therefore” God welcomed them. Honesty is the key bedfellow of faith, not a “fake it until you make it” attitude. “Keep longing for that better country… all the while not denying the utter pain of still having to slog through life on this broken planet.”
Reflection: “God doesn’t want plastic saints who paste yellow smiley-face stickers over everything.” (Scott Hoezee)
